Holmium is a relatively soft, silvery, fairly corrosion-resistant and malleable metal. Holmium is too reactive to be found in native form, as pure holmium slowly forms a yellowish oxide coating when exposed to air. Holmium is used to create the strongest artificially generated magnetic fields, when placed within high-strength magnets as a magnetic pole piece. Holmium is also used in the manufacture of some permanent magnets. The element's name comes from "Holmia", the Latin name for the Swedish city of Stockholm.
