Carbon in its solid state exists in several allotropes (forms), including graphite, a soft, black, and slippery material, and diamond, the hardest naturally occurring substance. This variation in physical properties arises from differences in atomic arrangement: graphite consists of layers of hexagonally arranged carbon atoms, while diamond features a rigid three-dimensional lattice.
The character design shows the different carbon allotropes in her skin, her dress and her throne. Her skin is graphite, and her crown and hair are diamond. The ruff collar is the cell structure of another carbon allotrope called "fullerenes", which is also the dress pattern. The atomic structures are shown in the throne decorations.
