Bismuth is a silvery-white colored metal when freshly produced. Surface oxidation generally gives samples of the metal a somewhat rosy cast. Further oxidation under heat can give bismuth a vividly iridescent appearance due to thin-film interference. Bismuth has been known since ancient times and it was one of the first 10 metals to have been discovered. Bismuth was known to the Incas and used along with copper and tin in a special bronze alloy for knives.
